History
Aheloy (3.5km/2.1miles) is a historically rich town, always going to be remembered for the epic battle between the Byzantine troops of Leo Phokas and the Bulgarian troops of King Simeon І The Great. The battle took place on August 20, 917 in the roundabouts of the Aheloy River, where years later, remains and relics of the soldiers’ bodies and their arms could still be found. The 60-thousand Bulgarian army utterly defeated the 62 thousand Byzantines, leaving Bulgaria the leading power not only on the Balkans, but also in the whole South-East of Europe.
In the town centre of Aheloy the community centre ‘Light’ could be found, with a hall for cultural activities, offering an interesting acquaintance with the history of the town and also with the ways, traditions and habits, built in people with time.
The town’s festival is on Ascension Day (the patron day of St. Spass – which is on a different date every year – in 2013 on June 13). A fair with lots of attractions and amusements is held on that day.
The yacht marina in the town is suited for berthing of yachts and fishing boats. Besides sea fishing, the river Aheloy is suitable for freshwater fishing.
Beaches
Sunny Beach (12km/7.5miles) – the biggest and most visited holiday resort on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. It has a long beach area (8km/5miles), opportunity for practicing many water sports; multiple restaurants, shops, cafes, bars, pubs, night clubs and discotheques, aqua park, carting race track, amusement centers, countless hotels and unique entertainment parks. Its never-stopping vibrant life and unbelievably many ways for relaxing and having fun, it offers, turn it into one of the most desirable places of the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast.
One of the emblematic, for Sunny Beach, places is the restaurant “Khan’s Tent”, located on a hill with a gorgeous panoramic view over the resort itself and the Nessebar coast. “Khan’s Tent” offers to its guests traditional Bulgarian cuisine and authentic surroundings, as well as everyday amusement programs, including national dances and martial arts.
St Vlas (16km/10miles) is located north from Sunny Beach. In the last 20 years it has over gone a tremendous change, and now, completely deserved, is often being referred to as “The Pearl of the Bulgarian Riviera”. The unique microclimate, a symbiosis of mountain and sea, typical for the seaside complex “Elenite” as well, is a good starting point for successful medical treatment of lung and bone diseases.
The local modern marina, big enough for 300 boats and yachts is often used not only by Bulgarians but by guests from all over Europe. There are boat sightseeing tours and challenges for the tourists and competition events and frigates for the yachtsmen.
Around the resort one can come across the remains of many monasteries, one of which had the name St Vlas. This particular monastery had been, many times, set on fire and robbed by pirates, who preferred the shores of the one-time fishermen’s village to divide their loot and prepare themselves for new forays.
Sights to visit
Nessebar
Nessebar (9.5km/5.9miles) – The city is under the aegis of UNESCO and is part of World Cultural Heritage. The centuries-old history, the preserved houses from the Bulgarian Revival, the churches and the multiple museums (mainly from Thracian, Greek and Roman times) attract a lot of tourists all-year-round. The town, with old name Mesembria, is situated on a small peninsula, cut into the sea.
Pomorie
Pomorie (19km/11.8miles) – the most famous balneology resort on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. It is famous for its healing mud from the Pomorie salt lake, the wines of fine vintage and the producing of salt. In 2007 it was announced as the capital of balneology, which put it ahead amongst the preferred places for all-year-round balneology, spa and wellness tourism.
Sozopol
Sozopol (55km/34.2miles) – a town, which was inhabited way back in 5th century B.C. Throughout the centuries it had been conquered, robbed, used as a harbor, as a hiding-place, as a trading crossroad.
In 2010 archaeological excavations helped in the discovery of the John the Baptist’s relics (the credibility and euthenics of the discovery have been proven to be true on a global level). Some of the buildings, the pavement streets, the Southern town wall and others still remind of the Roman and Byzantium presence in the past. Its name the town gets in 330 after being renamed from Apolonia into Sozopolis (which means “saved town”).
